Grace & Dotty — Pure New Wool

Flat Cap & Baker Boy Fitting Guide

Sizing, style and fit — everything you need to choose your perfect cap

Our Traditional Flat Cap and Baker Boy Cap are both crafted in pure new wool and available in four sizes — Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large. Both styles share the same head-circumference sizing, so once you know your size you can wear either style with confidence.

Our two styles

Flat Cap & Baker Boy — what's the difference?

Grace & Dotty Traditional Flat Cap
Traditional Flat Cap

The classic country cap — a one-piece, low-profile crown with a short, stiff peak at the front. Structured and close-fitting, it sits neatly on the head with a timeless, understated silhouette that suits any occasion from a country walk to a race day.

A fuller, rounder take on the classic cap — the Baker Boy features an 8-panel crown topped with a traditional fabric-covered button, giving a softer, more voluminous silhouette. The panelled construction allows the crown to sit higher and puff gently outward, lending it a fashion-forward character while keeping all the country charm.

How to measure

Three steps to your perfect fit

1

Gather your tools

You'll need a soft fabric tape measure — the kind used in dressmaking. A length of string or ribbon works equally well; simply mark the point where it meets, then measure against a ruler. A mirror is helpful but not essential.

2

Wrap the tape around your head

Position the tape measure approximately 1cm above your ears and across the mid-forehead — this is where both the flat cap and baker boy cap sit. Keep the tape level all the way around, pull it snug but not tight, and note the measurement in centimetres. The tape should sit roughly where the cap's inner band will rest.

3

Note your measurement and find your size

Once you have your head circumference in centimetres, use the chart below to select your size. If your measurement falls between two sizes, we recommend choosing the larger size — both styles can be adjusted slightly with hat-size tape inside the band, but a cap that is too small will never be comfortable.

M 57 cm 22½ in

L 59 cm 23¼ in

XL 61 cm 24 in

✓   Both the Traditional Flat Cap and Baker Boy Cap use the same size chart — your head circumference applies to either style.

Wearing your cap

How each style should sit

Traditional Flat Cap
  • Sits level on the head, roughly 1cm above the ears
  • Peak angled slightly downward at the front
  • Should feel firm and close-fitting — not sliding or lifting
  • The inner band should sit just above the brow without marking the forehead
  • Adjust the peak to your preferred angle — slightly forward is traditional
Baker Boy Cap
  • Sits slightly higher on the crown — the 8 panels allow the top to puff gently outward
  • Peak angles downward as with a flat cap, but the overall feel is more relaxed
  • The fuller panelled crown means it may feel a little less snug than a flat cap in the same size
  • Can be worn straight or with a slight tilt to the side for a fashion-forward look
  • The fabric-covered button should sit at the very centre top of the crown

Fitting tips & care

Between sizes?

Always size up when in doubt. A strip of hat-size tape (foam or velvet) applied inside the inner band can take in up to half a size comfortably. A cap that is too small, however, cannot be let out.

Pure wool eases with wear

Pure new wool is a natural fibre that breathes and gently moulds to the shape of your head over time. Both styles will feel more comfortable with each wear as the wool softens to your individual fit.

Caring for your cap

Spot clean with a damp cloth where possible. If a full clean is required, hand wash gently in cool water using a wool-friendly detergent and reshape whilst damp. Lay flat to dry away from direct heat. Do not tumble dry.
