Trilby Hat Fitting Guide

Find your perfect size in three simple steps

Our trilby hats are available in four sizes — Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large — and are crafted to fit snugly without pinching. A well-fitted trilby should sit level on the head, resting about 2cm above the ears. Follow the steps below to find your ideal size.

How to measure

Three steps to your perfect fit

Gather your tools

You'll need a soft fabric tape measure — the kind used for dressmaking. If you don't have one to hand, a length of string or ribbon works just as well; mark where it meets, then measure the length against a ruler.

Wrap the tape around your head

Place the tape measure around your head, positioning it approximately 2cm above your ears and across the mid-forehead — this is the natural resting position for a trilby brim. Keep the tape level all the way around and snug but not tight. Take the measurement in centimetres.

Note your measurement and find your size

Make a note of the measurement in centimetres, then use the chart below to find your size. If you fall between two sizes, we recommend sizing up — a trilby that is slightly too large can be adjusted with hat-size tape; one that is too small will be uncomfortable to wear.

Fitting tips

Between sizes?

If your measurement falls between two sizes — for example 56cm — we recommend choosing the larger size (Medium). A slightly generous fit is more comfortable, and a strip of hat-size tape inside the sweatband can take in up to a size if needed.

How a trilby should fit

A properly fitted trilby sits level on the head, approximately 2cm above the ears, with the front brim angled slightly down. It should feel secure without leaving a red mark on the forehead. A well-made hat will also ease slightly with wear.

Tweed and wool settle

Our trilbies are made from natural materials that ease and breathe with wear. The inner sweatband may take a session or two to mould to your head shape — this is completely normal and part of the natural break-in of a quality British hat.
